Boulder Scientific Tour:
NOAA, NIST and NCAR
The first stop is the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). The tour includes visits to several research divisions and the National Weather Service Forecast Office. Your tour guide will explain about NOAA as an agency that enriches life through science and how their reach goes from the surface of the sun to the depths of the ocean floor as they work to keep citizens informed of the changing environment around them. You will learn about NOAA's involvement in daily weather forecasts, climate monitoring, coastal restoration and supporting marine commerce.
Check your watch — the next stop on the tour is the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). Electric power companies, radio and television stations, telephone companies, air traffic control systems, participants in space exploration, computer networks, scientists and ship navigators rely on NIST. Tour attendees will learn about NIST’s mission to provide precise time and frequency information.
The tour will conclude at the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR). Here you will explore the Science Discovery Exhibit, which includes original weather satellites and supercomputing equipment. Interactive exhibits offer insights on a variety of natural phenomenon — from the characteristics of lightning to a live tornado simulation. Short movies and video clips from NCAR scientists explain weather and climate phenomena and provide overviews of how the Earth’s systems interact.
Price: $43 — includes gourmet boxed lunch, tour guide, transportation on a luxury motor coach, two bottles of water and all admittance fees.
Please note: All visitors will need to present a U.S. photo ID or foreign passport. No other forms of identification are accepted.
