Road trips
So you've never been to Colorado before and want to experience the Rocky Mountains. Here's a list of sights recommended by your fellow Mensans in the Denver area.
Blackhawk/Central City: These neighboring historic mining towns are now low- to medium-stakes gambling meccas as well as areas of historic interest.
Boulder/Chautauqua
Foothill tour: Red Rocks; Golden including Heritage Square, the Mother Cabrini Shrine and free samples at the Coors Brewery; Lookout Mountain including the Buffalo Bill Museum and Grave.
The Mount Evans Scenic Byway including Idaho Springs, St. Mary's Glacier, Georgetown and Guanella Pass
Pikes Peak
Rocky Mountain National Park/the Trail Ridge Road: This 48-mile highway — and full-day trip — offers some of the most spectacular scenery on the planet. A loop takes you through Idaho Springs, Winter Park, Granby, Estes Park, Lyons and Boulder. The Stanley Hotel in Estes Park is a restored turn-of-the-century playground of the rich and famous, now a great place to stop for lunch or dinner (even if you're not a Stephen King fan).
